Carlotaâs face lit up when Leon entered his office; as always, she was pleased to see him. âDid you learn anything from Señor Iglesias?â
He removed his jacket and put it on the back of his chair. âAll that I needed to know, actually.â He told her what had happened.
Impulsively, she embraced him. âOh, thatâs wonderful! Adriana must be ecstatic!â
âI must confess it was sheer luck.â
âYouâre too modest. What are you going to do about Iglesias and his people?â Sheâd dropped the Señor, heâd noticed. The man didnât deserve it.
âI intend paying him a return visit. Spoil his nasty operations.â
âIs that wise? Couldnât you let the Guardia and the national police handle it?â
âI could. But⦠The delay officialdom imposes on search warrants and approvals and joint operations means theyâll be too late and the bad guys will get away.â He eased himself from her embrace and moved to the Juan Romero de Torres painting on the far wall. He swung it aside and quickly spun the combination and opened the safe.
He took out his Astra A-100 automatic snug in its black leather shoulder holster, and dumped it on his desk.
Then he strode over to the small closet in the corner of the office, opened it. He removed his shirt, bunched it in a roll and gave his underarms a swift wipe with it then dropped it in the wastebasket. From the closet he took a black silk long-sleeved shirt and put it on . He kicked off his shoes, unbelted his pants and replaced them with a black pair of cargo pants.
Carlota was unfazed. The first time heâd needed to change in a hurry, heâd asked her to go into her office. Sheâd complied but halfway through changing sheâd entered with an urgent phone-call. âDonât worry,â sheâd said, ânudity is no big deal.â So this wasnât the first time heâd undressed in front of her. Nor would it be the last, he suspected. He shrugged into his shoulder holster, checked the Astra and then the Colt in his ankle holster.
He selected a pair of black rock hopper neoprene shoes from a closet shelf and fastened them.
She delved into a filing cabinet and handed him two magazines for each gun.
He distributed them in the various pants pockets so they wouldnât make a noise knocking against each other. Finally, he pocketed two pairs of latex gloves and a set of wire-cutters.
âI guess youâre ready to go?â she said, stroking his cheek.
âMore or less.â He kissed her lips. Moist, as inviting as ever. âDonât wait up.â
She sniffed. âThatâs a laugh. You know I wonât get any sleep.â
